Wired Holiday Fair!!!

December 13 2014 handmade fair wired cafe evansville IN

Yeah, I’m completely floored, but the fact is that this year I will be a part of this amazing experience. This art/craft show is filled to the brim with some of the best artists and crafters in the area, and I’ll be there with them. I can’t overstate how happy I am.

Here’s the event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/752170168174181/

The basics, this is a big art and jewelry/craft sale on December 13th, going on from 10am to 4pm at the Wired Coffee House, RAIN OR SHINE. There’s going to be an immense amount of talent here and I will be bringing my best game, including some new art.

This is a fantastic opportunity to pick up one-of-a-kind, thoughtful, and most of all FREAKIN’ AWESOME presents for pretty much anyone in your life. The prices are always nuts too (me and a lot of my buds here practically give our art away, it’s crazy) so this is a holiday shopping event not to be missed on any level.

Nomadic Views at Corvidae Collective, Nashville opens October 4

Stardust by Karen Short for Nomadic Views at Corvidae collective, Nashville

Coming from the amazing Corvidae Collective Gallery and Boutique in Nashville, TN is its latest show, Nomadic Views! Featuring “fantastical views from this world and Beyond,” it promises to be fantastic. I am very honored to have two pieces included in this show. Also, I’m sorry I couldn’t find a bigger image of “Stardust” by Karen Short for the feature image, I just used the one from the show description below. Looks freaking awesome though.

corvidae nomadic views show

The exhibit they’re currently showing, LIT, featuring artwork inspired by banned and challenged classics, is amazing too. My favorite is the Catcher in the Rye piece but they’re all great.

More sample music from Tales from the Clarkside!

sample music experimental jazz artistic comic carl clark sandpaperdaisy tribute to comic artist album

You’ll be hearing about this all week from me no doubt…these are samples from the amazing sintrumental jazz album “Tales from the Clarkside” that my friend Carl Clark is premiering at Cincy Comicon this upcoming Sept. 5-7!! You get more of a feel for the sheer variety and talent of his songs here…as before, accompanied by visuals from the comic I illustrated to accompany the album. He’s used the same pages as his backdrop for this video, so he may not be planning to show new art before our release at Cincy. We’ll see!

Our upcoming July 12 Hand Prints show featured in this Sunday’s paper!

The Sunday paper today (Evansville Courier and Press) featured a beautiful spread with our art for the upcoming July 12 “Hand Prints” show at Wessleman’s Nature Center, as you can see. The online article is here: http://www.courierpress.com/news/2014/jul/05/arts-beat-printmakers-step-out-of-the-shadows-in/

Thanks to Stephanie Osbourne of littlelemonpress for her awesome snapshot of our article. The prints shown are two lovely block prints by Stephanie: “Zinnias” and “Life and Death,” and my very own Tentacle Raccoon at the far right.

21st Annual Working Together Exhibition

Yesiree Bob (and everyone else besides Bob) I’m gonna have one of my pieces in Working Together 2014! I’ve been wanting to get into this show for over ten years now, so I’m even more thrilled than usual. This year, I finally got in with one of my Chordata pieces, the snake skeletons!

It’s funny, I was so proud of these babies when I finally finished them (THEY TOOK FOREVER) and then I virtually forgot about them after Patchwork Dragon, the solo show where they debuted. Thank goodness I thought of them when the call for entries came!!

The opening reception is Saturday July 12th from 6pm to 8pm at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science, feel free to come check it out! I saw some of the entries this year and there were some really cool things, I’m really interested and curious to see this year’s featured artists.

O-Iwa and Iyemon

from the first big kaidan, a noh play about a faithless murdering husband and his vengeful wife.

O-Iwa, the woman with the bird skull, and Iyemon, the terrified man drawing his weapon, are a diptych I did for my Patchwork Dragon solo show at Winzerwald Evansville Wine Tasting Room. I decoupaged origami paper, typing paper and joss paper (ghost money) on wood. Incidentally, while I wanted to use “ghost money” paper in a piece about an Asian ghost legend, I did NOT use the actual ghost money itself, white paper with a silver square in the middle. It can be insulting or alarming to use those publicly as some people think it is ill luck to look at them. Finally, I augmented each piece with black and white ink and comic zipatone. Below the images is a short description of the story these pieces are based upon.

O-Iwa and Iyemon are an iconic husband and wife from Yotsuya Kaidan (四谷怪談), the most famous Japanese horror story of all time. The story is rather long and complicated, but in short Iemon/Iyemon, the husband, became tired of his devoted and loving wife O-Iwa. Wanting to marry a richer and more influential woman, Iyemon poisoned O-Iwa shortly after she bore their child. O-Iwa did not die but became horribly disfigured, and ultimately took her own life. At Iyemon’s wedding, her vengeful disfigured ghost appeared right in front of his new bride. Enraged, he drew his sword to slay the spirit, and in so doing ended up killing the bride.

I created the ghostly O-Iwa with a bird skull as a substitution for her horribly disfigured face. Many of the pieces in Patchwork Dragon involved skeletal imagery, so I wanted to retain the theme as well as portray O-Iwa in a way she’s hopefully never been seen before. Ghostly blue flames (kaika) creep up the side of the screen next to her, while threatening black flames hover on either side of her and swarm around Iyemon’s scabbard, foreshadowing the horrible mistake he is about to be led into. The screen on the two pieces lines up perfectly so that when hung together, O-Iwa is clearly seen as advancing on the horrified and guilty Iyemon.

Sadly, this couple was separated! I only have Iyemon left now, frozen in the eternal fear his abominable actions have condemned him to suffer for all time. If you wish to have him, contact me and we’ll talk.

Let’s Agree to Disagree Duo Show by Amanda and Kristofer Sibrel

Lets Agree to Disagree show at PG 2014

Today let’s take a look at the playfully irreverent work of the artistic team of Amanda and Kristofer Sibrel! They’ve currently got a wonderful show at PG, showcasing pieces characteristic of each artist’s very distinct approach. Here’s the Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/248066348731601/ and below I have more images of each artist’s work! First, Amanda:

Amanda couples delicate pencil work on wood with painstakingly wrought patterns and tessellations to create a series of small gems that superficially resemble Russian or Greek icons, complete with roughly hewn wooden frames. However, this religious imagery is humorously applied to cats, with names like “Lazarus, Lord of Terror” and “Devourer of Souls” accompanying the admittedly rather adorable haloed housecats they describe. Although I must admit, as a long-time cat owner (or maybe “tolerated room-mate” is a better term) I could easily see any of these fearsome descriptions fitting a cat.

Kristofer’s gorgeous and unusual stained-glass pieces, each boasting its own light source, are a wonderful counterpoint to these quiet wooden portraits. Not pictured is “Sensory Fenestration,” a joint stained-glass effort between Amanda and Kristopher blazing with the different talents of each artist. These stained-glass works continue the theme of turning religious imagery on its head with pieces like “Lucifer’s Leotard,” a light-hearted and visually pleasing piece which nonetheless is modestly framed in an inverted cross. “Nosfowlratu” reveals more and more bird shapes as you look at it. And of course, like Amanda’s iconic pieces, stained glass is a medium many of us might typically associate with a religious setting.

I suspect that this gentle kaleidoscopic shifting of provocative elements may be the secret of “Let’s Agree to Disagree.” In an understated way, these pieces appropriate religious imagery to poke gentle fun at the ideas and images which have caused so much passion and unrest over the centuries. When you think about it, that’s pretty bold stuff! But rather than approach their bold statement like a shout or a slap in the face, this show resonates with the promise that even those with radically different beliefs and backgrounds can find a common ground, even one where they can laugh.

As usual, I’m only going to show you a few of these marvelous pieces. Suffice to say I adored the show in its entirety and I highly recommend it! It will be hanging at PG until June 17th, so go catch it!

Grandma’s Nightgown

the big bad wolf slipping into grandmother's bed after eating her up. Red riding hood. Heap of bloody clothes and body parts.

This is an old drawing, soft pastel on black paper. The subject is the Big Bad Wolf from “Red Riding Hood,” after (mostly) consuming Grandmother and then slipping into her bed.

I still have this one around and it’s even creepier in person. Email me if you’re interested!

Ramping up for SPACE MADNESS 2014 with a look back at SPACE MADNESS 2012!

As you may see in the “Upcoming Events” section below, I hope to be at The Arts Council of Doom‘s Space Madness II: There is No Cure group art show this summer.

The first Space Madness show was back in 2012 and was absolutely amazing. I was just becoming aware of the Arts Council of Doom’s activities when they were doing this show. Therefore, I missed it. So how do I know how stunning the show was?!

JEANNIE WORLEY’S AWESOME PHOTOS DOCUMENTING THE EVENT!!

You can see them two different places, on The Arts Council of Doom’s tumbr, and in this Facebook album. They give you some idea of how truly mindblowing this upcoming show promises to be. Check ’em out! And then come see the show. I’ll have more information on the 2014 show when I have a firm date, flyer and etc for it. Stay tuned!

Franklin Street is ON FIRE!! Weekly Bazaar to begin June 21

farmers market local homegrown artist crafter bazaar

As if EDAC wasn’t awesome enough, the Franklin Street Events Association is now gearing up to do the same thing EVERY SATURDAY in Summer. It will be a farmer’s market with all locally grown produce, planning to accept EBT/SNAP so that everyone can have access to good food, and in addition it will include several artist and crafter booths! In short, Franklin Street is establishing its very own weekly Bazaar that will have wonderful fresh food, local art, and crafts all summer long. It’s an amazing initiative and an local event not to be missed!

They’re finalizing their plans now. The last planning meeting is scheduled for June 7th, at 9am. Here’s the Facebook Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1437911746457875/

And the Bazaar itself is set to begin on June 21! Here is the event for that: https://www.facebook.com/events/496237040502190/

Photos from the Big Lebowski in Little China movie mashup show

big lebowski and whats opera doc imagery combined in this fanciful paper sculpture

As usual, please forgive my horrible digital shots. There are many more fantastic pieces in this show than what I have pictured here, it was painful to create just a sampling! But the show is still on, and if you want to see all the stunning pieces you gotta get down to PG Gallery and Cafe! Show ends May 17, 2014.

Event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1424815697773134/

Incidentally, I wrote this post while drinking a White Russian.

Miao Yin final piece and progress shots!

inspired by cult movie classic Big Trouble in Little China

I hope to post a nice little feature on the Big Lebowski in Little China show soon, but in the meantime I can definitely show you the evolution of Miao Yin from a digital painting to a beaded mixed-media piece with gold ink accents! (I ended up calling the final piece “Miao Miao” through some perverse desire to be a truly horrible person.)

This piece is at PG Gallery until May 17 2014 and is only $85. And trust me, I’m not making another beaded one. One was quite enough!! *PHEW!*

EDIT: This lovely piece has found a home with its biggest fan! I even got to talk to the person who got it, she’s super-sweet. There’s just nothing like seeing one of your pieces go home with someone you know loves it.
